Founded in 1925, Claremont Graduate University is an integral part of the prestigious Claremont Colleges, located 30 miles east of Los Angeles in Southern California. It boasts a multi-disciplinary graduate curriculum and globally-renowned scholars.

After conducting interviews with students, faculty members and stakeholders a brand platform was constructed to capture the university’s unique position and heritage. A brand audit was introduced to organize the breath of schools and programs.

As an ever-adapting symbol, the flame was the key symbol of CGU, harkening back to its founding. Simplifying it for the digital age, an entire overhaul of the brand was undertaken. Along with the visual identity update, an entire new website was created, giving applicants, students, and faculty a seamless user experience. To ensure consistent implementation of the new visual system, the brand guidelines were adapted into an online style guide.

Claremont’s visual identity system must be able to be applied to a range of materials, from institutional to energetic. Communications which are institutional use a more sophisticated and subdued tone, while marketing and event materials may incorporate a bolder, energetic style.
